DART x Luka sticker by Oliver Xie
Forming, Here, Again is a solo exhibition by artist Luka Vergoz(@lukavergoz ), jointly presented by DART(@dartmagazine ) and Third Space Art Collective(@3rdspacedavis ).
Third Space Art Collective is a non-profit community art space that operates as an exhibition venue, shared studios, workshops, and an art pantry providing free materials. Its layered and fluid functions resonate with Vergozโs process of transforming discarded matter into new forms.
Working with scraps that are byproducts of construction or casualties of time, Luka Vergoz reshapes and rearranges what has been overlooked into patterns, forms, and structures. His practice explores thresholds of becoming and unmaking: when a line becomes a shape, a shape becomes form, and texture becomes structure.
In Forming, Here, Again, Vergoz returns to Davis, where he completed his MFA before relocating to Oakland. This return reflects the exhibitionโs central question: if places once left behind and past experiences are themselves discarded materials, what new forms can emerge when we gather and reshape them?

Documentation Description:
1 & 2:
cut down, 2025, Wood, paint, mixed media. + fixed up, 2024, Wood, paint, screws, sawdust, glass, colored pencil
3(Left to right):
holey, Luka:โThinking about holes, dents, dips, voids, and shadows (of a kind beyond just light i.e. wind shadow). Studying how things scoot when gathered, moved, spread out. Thinking about the discounting of atmosphere and the air and non-solid matter that fills the space between and within objects. Reflecting on the seeming hierarchy of states of matter in our awareness and values that prioritizes solid matter over liquid and gaseus states. Also dwelling on matter as processes and an events rather than static "things"โ
+
plank walk (left) and all a board (right), Luka: โNo deep meaning here, just playing around in composition, gatherings, and the affordances allowed to painting to reside in meaninglessness, decoration, and frivolity โ
+
layers of elevation, just on time : โTo me, this work reflects on the idea of layers and how scale can turn the direction up and down into in and out. And how material can turn layers of time into layers of space (as in wood, rock layers, etc.) โ

4:
scratchy triptych, Luka:โDealing with a kind of sensitivity to texture, and making a drawing into an object (if only just barely). Bringing drawing back into the sculptures. All works here are dealing heavily with the multiple, variation, clustering, and the tension between surface and sculpture, rectangle and the itch to break it, and the cycles an dshuffle of matter on varying scales (of both time and space) as well as the language we use to discuss, value, and categorize matterโ
+
hung up, Luka: โReflecting on artwork and object as comodities, the pressure to make work hangable (collectable) and to package things in a way that appeals to particular sensibilities. The plastic is cut from the bottom of my car (it used to scrape the pavement frequently, causing a really loud noise and people to look towards me) , so in this way, to me, this work makes me think of sound and visibility. I. also just wanted to package the trash in a way that would suggest it is a kit to be assembled. โ

8&9:
sticky diptych, Luka: โThinking about how things are attached, what sticks to what, and how the scale of consideration affects what is considered a texture, and adhesive, a handle, sharp, etc. How do things hold on?โ
10:
shelf life, Luka: โThinking about the lives of objects, how matter is grouped and scattered over time and at different scales. Meaning of decomposition, disposal, decay. Thinking about the collection of objects and the boundaries between each object, its setting, other objects, other settingsโ
